Ylang Ylang and Montezuma beach were everything I was hoping for when I booked our vacation. If your day to day life has gotten crazy and you're looking to spend a little time exploring a slower pace of life; if you want to have a few fun activities, but don't want to spend your Costa Rican vacation driving; if you want quite seclusion combined with convenience; beautiful landscapes; friendly faces; great food and perfect weather this is the place to go. Ylang Ylang is a very short walk from town, but feels miles away. We stayed in the Tree Top Canopy where we were visited daily by white faced monkeys; could hear the howler monkeys, and caught a glimpse of the elusive coati. Walking the grounds of the resort we saw many iguanas, basilisk, hermit crabs, land crabs, herons, and agouti. We had a great time learning to surf from Rainier, at Young Vision Surf School. We ran into Crazy Carlos on our way up Montezuma falls who showed us the best spots to dive. Eduardo was a weal...

Wonderful secluded resort close to a small town. Dinner and breakfast are included in the stay even if you stay in the smaller cabinas or the larger domes. The food is skewed toward the veggie / vegan crowd, which is the main reason we chose the location. Tons of other options for the omnivores. The entire resort is eco friendly, with a large focus on reducing consumption. A short 15 min walk to town will bring you to a few other dining and shopping options. Great place overall to unwind and relax.

I kept pinching myself. Couldn't believe I was in such a gorgeous place. Fabulous garden jungle. Captivating ocean views and wave running. Delicious food. Not many people. Contemplative. Lovely staff. Yoga with roaring waves in the background. Monkeys, iguanas, crabs. If you want a big resort, pool cabana, and endless drinks go somewhere else. If you want to go to the end of the road (literally and figuratively) and chill out in an oasis - this is the place. 11 and 14 year old kids loved it too.

Montezuma'a Favorite Beach Resort

The meaning of Ylang Ylang [ee-lang – ee-lang]: It is a yellow tropical flower, originally from Indonesia. The owners of Ylang Ylang Beach Resort & Sano Banano Beachside Hotel, have been living in Costa Rica since the late 1970’s.

They acquired a beautiful beach front property after their wedding in 1981, and set out to live off the fat of the land, tropical style.

Fruit trees were planted, gardens were sown and shortly after their two children were born, Moraya & Syska.

Making a living at that time consisted of hard, physical labor and lots of experimentation and determination. It turned out that drying the excess fruit was the most profitable labor at the time, using only the heat of the sun, as there was no electricity.

In 1989 electricity came to town and new opportunities abounded. With the small but adequate income saved from drying fruit, they purchased a small lot in the village center of Montezuma and created a natural foods restaurant called Sano Banano (The Healthy Banana).

The first of its kind in Costa Rica, it took off and quickly became the meeting center for travelers from around the world. From the very beginning it established its excellent reputation for serving delicious fresh, homemade foods.

Breakfast, lunch and dinner were served 7 days a week and every night a different movie was on display for all to enjoy. From the proceeds Lenny & Patricia began to develop their beach front property into a self sustaining resort, slowly building bungalows and guest rooms with the land in mind.

Trees were never cut in favor of buildings and the only time a backhoe was used was for digging the hole for their enchanting swimming pool in 2000.

In early 2005, they changed the name to Ylang Ylang Beach Resort, named after the exuberantly aromatic Ylang Ylang flower which grows profusely in the tropics.

The Ylang Ylang Beach Resort is one of the top beach resorts in Montezuma, Costa Rica – a small piece of paradise…
